The current report on proton therapy is the latest in a series of ICRU reports dealing with prescribing, recording, and reporting of external-beam radiation therapy. This joint report of the ICRU and the IAEA highlights the long and effective collaboration between the two organizations.
Robert R. Wilson was the first to recognize the potential advantage of protons and light ions for external-beam radiation (Wilson, 1946). In this benchmark publication, Wilson outlined all the advantages that protons and light ions would offer due in large part to their physical dose distributions. At the energies used for therapy, protons interact almost exclusively with atomic electrons in Coulomb force collisions yielding nearly straight trajectories culminating in a rapid increase in energy loss near the end
